Schoolchildren in Leeds have taken part in a scheme designed to prevent them experiencing debt problems in later life.

Using a special board game called Moneybox, pupils at Brigshaw High School are learning about how to make sensible financial decisions and resolve money issues, Garforth Today reports.

The game was devised by West Yorkshire Trading Standards and will soon be found in schools in other UK cities, such as Newcastle and London.

Enterprise coordinator at the school Liz Merriman said Moneybox is helping the children to become "good consumers".

"It's about making them money aware in a fun way, while it ties in nicely with the school curriculum," she explained.

Asked for his opinion on the game, 14-year-old Aiden Atkin said: "It's good because you can borrow money for things that you haven't got, but if you get into debt it's difficult to pay back and you can get into trouble".

Children's charity Action for Children is currently running a series of workshops aimed at helping families with young children avoid major financial problems.
