Research from moneysupermarket.com reveals that 22 per cent of British women intend to spend less money on their valentine this year, with the average female shelling out just £22.
The survey also found that 16 per cent of men will reduce their Valentine's Day expenditure this year, although 20 per cent intend to increase the amount they spend on their beloved.
According to moneysupermarket.com, the typical male will spend £48 on romantic gifts, cards and dinner for Valentine's Day this year.
In an indication of how the pressures of debt may be impacting on the romantic live of UK people, counselling service Relate reported a 60 per cent increase in the number of people seeking help with their relationships.
"The problems are to do with the recession, to do with job insecurity, to do with interest rates changing and also the escalating costs of running the family," Relate spokesperson Christine Northam explained.
