uSwitch: few to escape energy worriesThursday 2nd October 2008

Few households will be "unscathed" and some may even need debt advice when the last energy supplier finally raises its prices, according to price comparison website uSwitch.

Energy firms npower and Scottish Energy are the most recent companies to announce gas and electricity price increases.

Higher energy payments could be enough to push some consumers over the edge, adding to the debt and bad credit risks they may already be suffering from the credit crunch.

Responding to the recent spate of cost rises, Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, warned consumers that few are likely to emerge from the increases without some financial concerns.

She explained: "The industry-wide shift to higher household energy prices is almost complete.

"Only one supplier has yet to increase prices for a second time this year - when this final blow falls few households will emerge unscathed or unconcerned about the future affordability of their energy."

The National Housing Federation last week demanded that action be taken to help families struggling with debt by stopping higher prices for prepayment meters.
