Research by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) found that 60 per cent of safety representatives have reported concerning levels of overwork or stress.
Stress was cited as the biggest concern in ten of the 14 TUC sectors, with the highest number of cases reported in central government, education and health services.
The survey also found that worried Brits make up 66 per cent of workplaces with over 1,000 workers, compared to 53 per cent in firms with less than 50 employees.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, called on unions and employers to work together to support workers who are suffering from stress.
"Stress casts a gloomy shadow over far too many UK workplaces. And as the current economic crisis creates more anxiety about job security, stress is likely to increase," he added.
The Financial Services Authority this week revealed a 71 per cent annual increase in the number of homes which have been repossessed.
