UK unemployment up 80,000 Thursday 18th September 2008

UK unemployment rose again between May and July, official figures have shown, prompting fresh fears that consumer debt problems could be set to spiral this year.

Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that number of Britons out of work grew by 81,000 over the period.

This brought the total jobless figure to 1.72 million, or 5.5 per cent of the population.

The study comes as new figures have shown that the number of people claming unemployment benefit rose by 32,000 in August to bring the total to 904,900.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: "Today's figures show that unemployment is starting to accelerate and it now looks very likely that total unemployment will reach two million during 2009."

The spectre of further job losses and signs that the economy is shrinking have added weight to concerns that millions of indebted Britons will be unable to pay their loan, mortgage and credit card debt.
