UK residents told to seek debt advice

UK residents told to seek debt adviceWednesday 31st December 2008

British people struggling with debt have been urged to seek professional advice in the new year.

Linda Hutchinson, manager of a Citizen's Advice Bureau (CAB) in Cambridgeshire, told the Fenland Citizen that UK consumers should take action to tackle their personal debt problems sooner rather than later.

Although she admitted that there is "no magic wand" to make debts disappear, Ms Hutchinson advised debtors to get help from an expert if their finances become problematic.

She told the local newspaper: "2009 is going to be tough. We would just say to people to get help as soon as possible."

About 40 per cent of enquires at Ms Hutchinson's CAB in Wisbech currently relate to debt issues.

Consumer affairs minister Gareth Thomas also recently urged people with debt concerns to ask for assistance. He claimed that getting help at an early stage is "imperative" for resolving financial problems.
