Travel plans curtailed by credit card debt

Travel plans curtailed by credit card debtTuesday 11th November 2008

A 27-year-old man has revealed how debts accumulated from years of credit card borrowing have left him unable to pay for his dream trip around the world.

London resident Ben Allen told the Independent on Sunday that he currently has debts totalling about £8,000 on various credit cards, as well as student loans of approximately £12,500.

He explained that he initially used the credit cards to cover everyday expenses before entering full-time employment several years ago, but now finds they are putting his personal finances under considerable strain.

“I'd like to go around the world for about six months before I have too many responsibilities … But I feel anchored to this country by my debt,” Mr Allen said.

The newspaper advised the debtor, who works as a marketing consultant for a public relations company, to start tackling his financial problems before his level of debt becomes totally unmanageable.

Last week, many student groups staged protests over the large debts which young people across the UK are struggling to deal with due to university top-up fees.
