Students gather for debt protests
Thursday 6th November 2008
In a day of demonstrations dubbed Students in the Red and organised by the National Union of Students (NUS), university-goers claimed that the current fee system is leaving too many students with crippling debts.
According to the BBC, students in the north-east unfurled a banner from Gateshead's Millennium Bridge bearing the figure '£25k' the average level of student debt in that part of the country.
NUS president Wes Streeting called for a "full, frank and public debate about the current fees system ahead of a general election before families are saddled with even more debt".
Meanwhile, a group of Yorkshire students planned to take part in the protests by creating a 'wall of debt' on campus at the University of Bradford, the Telegraph and Argus reports.
Recent statistics from Credit Action state that the average UK student will leave university with debts totalling £14,161.
