Students act to cut debt levels

Students act to cut debt levelsTuesday 30th September 2008

Students are taking drastic steps to cut their outgoings, as looming debt and higher living costs hit their finances.

In a poll from Abbey, 50 per cent of undergraduates surveyed admitted that they plan to raise extra money this term by selling possessions on online auction sites such as eBay.

This compares with 22 per cent of the population who are also intending to sell their belongings.

Other measures being considered by students were taking second jobs and the extreme option of volunteering as a medical research subject.

Steve Shore, Abbey director of banking, commented: "The majority of students living on a fixed income may find the coming months tough with the price of essential goods and services such as food and energy continuing to rise.

"Students more than ever will need to set themselves a strict budget and should ensure that they are shopping around for the best deals, this includes financial products such as the bank account they use."

The National Union of Students has forecast that plans to introduce higher top-up fees will mean that the cost of a university education will rise to £40,000.
