Thousands of elderly Britons are cutting back on essential food and heating as a direct result of soaring energy costs, it has been revealed.

According to recently-published figures from consumer website uSwitch.com, the typical UK household now faces an annual energy bill of nearly £1,300, pushing as many as 30 per cent of pensioners into fuel poverty.

Now, Age Concern has warned that many may be placing themselves at risk by trying to save money on fuel and electricity and has urged the government to do more to ensure that they can cope over the cold winter months.

"Steep hikes in energy bills have resulted in thousands of older people cutting back on essential food and heating, potentially putting their health at risk," the charity's director general Gordon Lishman noted.

"This could lead to a rise in the numbers affected by cold-related illnesses, which contribute to thousands of the excess winter deaths of older people each year."

Just recently, the Office for National Statistics revealed that the number of excess winter deaths rose by seven per cent between 2007 and 2008.
