Spending precautions urged ahead of January sales

This is the warning from online payment service PayPal, which recommends that shoppers find out when their preferred shops begin their sales.
Particularly important is sticking to a budget, with the "don't overspend just because it's a bargain" message having been highlighted.
General manager for PayPal merchant services in the UK Cameron McLean said that online shopping is becoming as popular as high street bargain hunting.
"With hundreds of top retailers starting their online sales early and the temperatures dropping we expect even more shoppers than usual to head online to pick up a sale bargain," he commented.
Mr McLean went on to say that large numbers of shoppers were heading to the shops in order to take advantage of the reduced rate of VAT.
Further PayPal recommendations include checking and comparing prices, understanding returns and refund policies and checking for extra discounts, which usually come in the form of voucher codes.
Sainsbury's Finance recently predicted that £1.37 billion had been spent by last-minute festive shoppers on Christmas Eve, which translates as £951,000 spent every minute.
It was also revealed that 1.53 million people intended on doing between 91 and 100 per cent of their Christmas shopping in the 24 hours before December 25th.
Approximately 2.1 million people planned on using their credit cards to buy at least half of their Christmas shopping, which may of interest to those involved in debt management.
