Social class 'determines income'
Social class 'determines income'
Wednesday 10th September 2008
The announcement, from cabinet minister Harriet Harman, launches a year-long investigation into income inequality by the Institute of Fiscal Studies.
Figures show that the gaps between the richest and poorest members of society has increased since the Labour government has been in power.
Since 1997, the richest 20 per cent has seen the richest share of national income increase by 1.7 per cent, while the poorest fifth have seen their share drop by 0.5 per cent.
Ms Harman will tell the TUC Congress that "family background, your wealth and social class" are the major determining factors when it comes to income.
She will also tell the congress: "The robust evidence base that the panel will produce will help us properly target measures to address persisting equality gaps and build on the good work that we have already done."
Figures also indicate that inequality, which is likely to have been exacerbated by a Britain's so-called debt culture, has risen to its highest level since 1961 under this Labour government.
