Shopping addict tackles credit card debt
Friday 30th January 2009
Holly Smith told the Glasgow Sunday Mail that she realised her debt was becoming unmanageable after filling three wardrobes with clothes worth over £10,000.
The 23-year-old ski centre manager from Aberdeen then banned herself from buying anything for an entire year in an attempt to clear her debts, while recording her experiences online in a blog.
"By the second month I was getting withdrawal symptoms, but once the satisfaction of being able to pay off my cards kicked in I found it easier to manage," she told the newspaper.
Ms Smith managed to pay off all her debts after nine months of her self-imposed shopping ban and has since saved £5,000.
According to data from Apacs, the average outstanding balance for credit card holders in the UK is £1,856.
