Scottish students reveal debt levelsWednesday 12th November 2008

A group of students in Scotland recently took part in a demonstration to publicise the high levels of debt facing university-goers.

Students added their personal tallies to a giant display of debt on the Stirling University campus, where many young people feel angry about the financial struggle associated with higher education, the Stirling Observer reports.

Tom Spencer, president of the Stirling University Students' Association, told the newspaper that the situation is particularly difficult for students in Scotland, who are eligible for less financial support than their English counterparts.

"We are campaigning because of the inequality of the UK's funding system," he explained.

"In Scotland the situation is even worse since the introduction of top-up fees in England."

Councillors in the Renfrewshire area of Scotland recently pledged £214,000 in funding for new debt advice services following an increase in people seeking help with money problems.
