Scottish graduates 'unhappy with debt'
Friday 14th November 2008
Whats more, a survey conducted by Ipsos Mori for the Scottish Funding Council shows just 56 per cent of those polled believe that going to university has boosted their earnings potential, the Herald reports.
This suggests that debt management will not be easy for graduates, a view which is reinforced by the fact that around one in four of the people who left university in 2004 are only working in their current jobs in order to avoid unemployment.
"The fact that one-quarter of those surveyed say they've been forced to accept a job purely to pay off debts or stave off unemployment is deeply worrying," Gurjit Singh, president of NUS Scotland, told the newspaper.
However, there was more encouraging news with 70 per cent of respondents saying their careers were "on track".
Meanwhile, students at Stirling University recently drew attention to the levels of debt they have been subjected to by organising a day of protests.
