New year party plans hit by debt worries

New year party plans hit by debt worriesTuesday 30th December 2008

Many British people are preparing to celebrate the new year at home due to financial concerns.

According to a survey from the Post Office, 79 per cent of UK residents claim that their New Year's Eve plans have been affected by the credit crunch and growing worries about debt.

Emma Baunach, home insurance manager at the Post Office, said the findings were "no surprise" given the economic turmoil seen this year.

"It's been a tough year financially for many and the expense of going out, coupled with icy temperatures and transport chaos, make a night in with loved ones a very appealing option for seeing out 2008," she explained.

Meanwhile, a separate survey from National Savings & Investments (NS&I) found that 42 per cent of people are planning low-key celebrations to save money on December 31st.

"It is good to see that people are finding creative and less expensive ways to celebrate in an attempt to avoid a new year hangover," commented Dax Harkins, senior savings strategist at NS&I.
