New figures show sharp rise in demand for debt advice

New figures show sharp rise in demand for debt advice Wednesday 10th June 2009

New figures that have been published today (June 10) have revealed a greater need for debt management solutions in England and Wales as an increasing number of consumers plunge into the red due to various circumstances.

The numbers released by charity Citizens Advice show that its bureaux in the regions have recorded a large and rising hike in debt, alongside employment and benefits-related enquiries in the last year.

Demand for debt advice was 21 per cent higher between January and March 2009 compared to the same period in 2008 as debt occupied the bulk of enquiries, with 1.93 million new problems tackled by bureaux, up 11 per cent on 2007/8.

Matters concerning employment recorded a 17 per cent rise compared to last year as benefits-related enquiries increased by 13 per cent.

According to Citizens Advice chief executive David Harker, the figures highlight the human impact of the recession as more people are forced to seek guidance.

"In particular we are seeing an enormous rise in the number of people turning to us for help because they have lost their job, or are struggling with debts or having problems keeping up with their mortgages," he stated.

"It is therefore absolutely vital that all lenders and creditors treat people in arrears fairly and sympathetically, negotiate with borrowers in trouble and do everything they can to help ease their debt problems and avoid adding to them."

The latest statistics from debt charity credit Action show that total UK personal debt at the end of April 2009 stood at £1,459 billion.
