New figures reflect north-south debt advice divide
Friday 12th June 2009
According to the latest figures released by the Local Government Association (LGA), the number of skilled trade workers, as well as un-skilled workers claiming Jobseeker Allowance has risen by 77 per cent over the past 12 months.
Notably, while the south-east is witnessing a marked rise in white-collar unemployment, it is in areas such as Yorkshire that low-earners are feeling the brunt of the economic downturn, with many turning to professionals for debt advice as they lose their jobs in industry.
Such blue collar woes are also being strongly felt in the West Midlands and the south of Wales, the official statistics also show, with observers arguing that any recovery plans should be geared to reflect these regional discrepancies.
Sir Jeremy Beecham, LGA vice-chairman, commented: "The analysis clearly shows that different parts of the country are being affected by the recession in very different ways - even within individual regions there are marked differences as to how local areas are faring."
"A national, one size fits all approach to dealing with the recession simply isn?t going to work," he added.
This comes soon after the LGA warned that growing numbers of Britons could be at risk of bypassing professional debt advice services and turning to loan sharks as they struggle with their personal finances in the wake of the credit crunch.
