MPs hear of student debt woesFriday 13th February 2009

A committee of MPs has been informed that debt is the worst part of the university experience for students in the UK.

On Monday (February 9th), a group of 11 students from around the country spoke to the Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Select Committee about university life.

According to timeshighereducation.co.uk, the discussions at Portcullis House in Westminster were dominated by concerns over the high levels of debt experienced by many students.

Ken Harris, a mature student currently studying at the University of Wolverhampton, told the MPs that he had given up a £25,000 salary to change careers by going to university, but is now likely to graduate with debts of £25,000.

Other attendees said that financial difficulties had put them off pursuing opportunities for further study.

Representatives of the National Union of Students and higher education institutions in Liverpool, Birmingham and Loughborough were also present at the talks.

Personal finance website Thrifty Scot recently advised graduates to consider a debt consolidation as a way of organising their finances.
