Both British Gas and EDF have raised their tariffs in recent weeks, with the remaining energy companies predicted to follow suit imminently.
However, in a survey from the price comparison site, 39 per cent of the respondents said they cannot afford to pay their bills when prices rise again.
Furthermore, 17 per cent said they could only comfortably afford an extra £10 a month, while one in ten said a monthly increase of £20 would be manageable.
Ann Robinson, head of consumer policy at uSwitch.com, said: "The meteoric rise in the cost of living is affecting virtually every household and age group - it is leaving a hole in our pockets that pay rises alone cannot fill.
"Households who are concerned about their jobs, their homes and their ongoing ability to pay their bills will be left with no choice but to cut back on both heating and eating this winter."
Higher energy costs have been cited as a key contributory factor behind experts' predictions that the UK's consumer debt problem will spiral over the years.
