Graduates' debt management endangered by exploitative employers
Graduates' debt management endangered by exploitative employers
Monday 29th March 2010
This could compound debt problems, as almost 40 per cent of students now expect to finish their education with more than £15,000 of debt.
The TUC has launched a new website to help exploited workers in an attempt to redress the balance.
In an extremely competitive job market, graduates are desperate to make their CVs stand out from the crowd and employers are taking advantage.
According to the TUC's research, a significant proportion of employers are using graduates' desperation as a way of securing free labour.
Often this is actually illegal, with the positions filled not exempted from minimum wage legislation, entitling the unpaid interns to a salary.
Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said: "Internships can be a positive experience and offer a kick start to a career that many young people value.
"But as more and more graduates are being forced to turn to internships in place of traditional entry level jobs, we're concerned that a growing number of interns are at risk of real exploitation."
Students, hit by escalating fees and the expense of living away from home unable to work full time to support themselves, are increasingly finding debt management a struggle.
The expectation today that graduates will work for free is only making it more difficult to practise healthy debt management plans.
