Financial education 'could prevent debt'

Financial education 'could prevent debt'Thursday 29th January 2009

A new study claims to offer proof that personal finance qualifications in schools can play a significant role in helping people to manage their money effectively.

Researchers at the University of Manchester carried out a three-year project which tracked over 3,000 students who had taken a standalone certificate or diploma in financial studies at AS and A level, or the equivalent.

The study found that 95 per cent of students reported a good understanding of financial matters after taking the course, suggesting that such qualifications could effectively improve money management skills and reduce the likelihood of debt problems.

Several politicians, including conservative shadow treasury minister David Gauke and Labour MP Mark Lazarowicz, were due to speak in support of the findings during a reception at parliament on Wednesday January 28th.

Mr Lazarowicz is the current chair of the all party parliamentary group on debt and personal finance.

Major employers such as Grant Thornton and Abbey have recently announced the launch of new financial education schemes for their workers.
