Fighting the urge to spend 'could boost debt management'

Fighting the urge to spend 'could boost debt management'Thursday 2nd April 2009

Many women could improve their financial situation and avoid debt problems by resisting the urge to "splash out" on big purchases, it has been claimed.

Professor Karen Pine, a researcher at the University of Hertfordshire, has published a study claiming that female shoppers are more likely to lose control of their spending at certain stages of their menstrual cycle.

Commenting on the research, Cosmopolitan magazine's features editor Fiona Cowood said that women should "just think twice" before making any outlandish purchases, particularly if they are already in debt or trying to stick to a budget.

Although she did not fully endorse Professor Pine's report, Ms Cowood described the findings as "interesting".

She advised women to "ring up a friend and go for a coffee or a drink" when feeling emotional, rather than hitting the shops with their credit card.

Professor Pine's report, entitled Sheconomics: How women's emotions cost them money, indicates that female spending becomes less controlled in the days leading up to their monthly period.

"It is well documented, for example, that women experience a rise in impulsive behaviour, anxiety and irritability during the pre-menstrual phase," she explained.

"This is the first study to show it that this affects their spending behaviour."

According to Professor Pine's research, some women impulsively overspent by more than £250 during the pre-menstrual phase of their cycle.

Her report will be presented at the annual conference of the British Psychological Society in Brighton today (April 2nd).
