Debt management could help seasiders cope with unemployment
Friday 21st August 2009
The worst hit resorts were Bournemouth, Weston-Super-Mare and Weymouth, which saw unemployment increases of 130 per cent, 122 per cent and 113 per cent respectively, according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Those who have lost their job and are subsequently struggling to cope financially could find speaking to a debt management specialist an effective way of dealing with the situation.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said that despite the best efforts of the seaside towns and the increase in holidaymakers, unemployment levels run the risk of causing a 'lost generation'.
He said: "In spite of [the increase in people holidaying at the] UK's seaside resorts and tourist industry, unemployment is at crisis level in many of our best-loved traditional English holiday destinations.
"A whole generation of young people in seaside towns are finding it almost impossible to make the right start to their working lives."
He went on to say that with the economy in "deep trouble", Britain's youth faced a tough future.
People who have lost their job or young people who are struggling to cope with new financial responsibilities without work may wish to speak to a professional debt management advisor.
Unemployment rose by 2.4 million earlier this month, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics.
