Debt management could allow Brits to holiday abroad

Debt management could allow Brits to holiday abroad Wednesday 29th July 2009

A vast number of Britons are foregoing their holiday abroad this year as a result of financial difficulties.

Sainsbury's Finance estimates that 63 per cent of all UK holidaymakers intend on holidaying domestically this summer – equivalent to a total of 19.8 million people.

Approximately 20 per cent of those remaining within the UK indicated that the predominant reason for staying within the country was an inability to afford a holiday elsewhere.

Those with unordered finances who wish to holiday abroad could consider seeking professional debt management advice in order to tidy up their finances and potentially afford that foreign break.

Sam Marrs, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's, said: "With a significant number of us still intending to get away this summer, holidaymakers are taking a range of measures to reduce their holiday spend, holidaying in the UK instead of abroad being the main one."

Staying at home is not the only holiday cost-cutting exercise adopted by Britons however.

Approximately one in ten Brits will afford their break by booking into cheaper accommodation, while 14 per cent will simply take less spending money with them.

Astonishingly, 170,000 Britons will leave their partner or children at home this year and holiday on their own – a number that could potentially be reduced if people sought professional debt management help.

According to Sainsbury's Finance, more than 2.5 million people from the south-east will remain in Britain for their holiday this year, approximately 60 per cent of the region's population.
