Debt debates on the agenda in Scotland
Friday 14th November 2008
Starting in Glasgow on Thursday November 20th, the debates will cover issues such as student debt, the minimum wage and role of private sector funding for higher education.
Following an event in Edinburgh, the main discussion of debt is due to take place in Aberdeen on December 5th, when acceptable levels of debt for university-goers will be on the agenda.
The issue has proved to be controversial topic in Scotland recently, with a survey published by the Scottish Funding Council revealing that almost half of graduates who left university in 2004 are still in debt.
President of NUS Scotland Gurjit Singh told the Herald that the findings "highlight areas of concern", with one-quarter of graduates claiming they accepted a job purely to pay off debts.
