Couples may be forced to stay together without debt management
Friday 8th January 2010
That is according to the charity Shelter, which says the lack of affordable housing is at the root of the problem.
More separation and divorce proceedings begin in the first week of January than any other throughout the year.
According to new research by Shelter a quarter of Brits the equivalent of 9.9 million people know a couple who have had to carry on living together because the partners were not able to afford living on their own.
It also reveals that housing costs are a major source of arguments between couples and within families, with nearly one in six respondents, the equivalent of 6.6 million nationally, saying that these concerns had led to arguments with partners or family members.
People who want to move to their own house but cannot afford to could benefit by talking to a debt management company about solutions such as debt consolidation loans.
Director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, Kay Boycott said: "Unfortunately relationships do break down which is painful enough, but being forced to carry on living with an ex-partner, even for a short time, must add real pressure to the situation.
"The fact one in four of us either have experienced or know someone that has experienced this situation, means this may be more widespread a problem than we realised.
"As a nation we have accepted the way housing costs have risen hugely over the last few years, but are we ready to accept the human cost this brings?"
