New research has indicated that British people will not let debt worries affect their spending plans this Christmas.

According to a survey from Direct Line Home Insurance, 74 per cent of UK consumers are not planning to spend less money than last year on festive gifts for their loved ones.

The research found that the typical Christmas shopper is planning to purchase ten presents for family members and friends this year, totalling £407 on average.

"As ever, the nation is fully embracing this year's Christmas festivities … The research shows the average gift is worth around £40," said Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance.

However, the survey also discovered that many Britons are planning to save money on festive items by making a special effort to find bargains.

Moneywise.co.uk recently advised people to plan their seasonal shopping carefully in order to avoid problems with credit card debt in the new year.
