Construction job cuts hit debt-struck consumers
Construction job cuts hit debt-struck consumers
Friday 11th July 2008
Earlier this week, Barratt, Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon all confirmed they are reducing their staff in the face of the slowdown in the UK housing market.
Today, the woes for construction workers have been compounded by Redrow and Bovis Homes confirming that they are reducing their workforces by 450 and 400 staff respectively.
The announcements bring the number of jobs shed by construction firms to 5,000 in the last week.
A spokesman for the main construction union Ucatt said that conditions in the sector have been worsening for the last six months.
He told the Guardian: "There has been a steady stream [of job cuts] since the beginning of the year - probably about 4,000 by now.
"The trouble with the housebuilding industry is that it is very casualised, so it is impossible to get an accurate picture of the numbers."
