Church leader stresses need for debt advice

The Very Reverend Donald Lyon, head minister at St Barnabas Episcopal Church in Florida, suggested that the economic downturn has made people more receptive to Biblical ideas about controlling debt.
Reverend Lyon said: "The Bible teaches us that debt becomes almost like bondage in a person's life. We've accumulated debt that is a backbreaker."
According to the Guardian, religious leaders across the US have reported a growth in the number of worshippers interested in methods of cutting back on their spending and reducing debt.
Churchgoer Jennifer Quintero recently sought help on budgeting and debt management, despite working as a financial analyst.
"I can manage everybody's finances but my own," she said.
In the UK, Credit Action data shows that the average household debt now stands at £59,630 including mortgages.
