A survey by HSBC found that the average UK consumer expects to spend £479 on cards, presents and other seasonal accessories during the festive period.
People in the 44 to 55 age group were discovered to be the biggest Christmas spenders, with an average outlay of £579, while the north-east and Wales were found to be the most generous regions in terms of festive spending.
In contrast, a recent survey from Abbey Credit Cards stated that 31 per cent of consumers are planning to cut back on Christmas present spending this year.
Debbie Thomas, head of savings at HSBC, urged people to be careful with their money during the Christmas period.
"Everyone knows that Christmas is an expensive time but by tucking away the cash, albeit sometimes small amounts, it can really add up to make next Christmas much more manageable," she said.
