Christmas shoppers get tips to avoid debt
Wednesday 3rd December 2008
According to Citizens Advice, people who take a negligent attitude towards personal finance at Christmas are likely to begin the new year with severe debt problems.
In collaboration with Barclaycard, the organisation has compiled a set of tips for a financially healthy Christmas, advising Britons to plan early, remember everyday bills and shop around.
"Christmas is a time of giving, but you don't want to give yourself a headache in the new year with bills and debts you can't afford," said John Rhodes, head of financial capability at Citizens Advice.
"It's all too easy to overspend - there are tempting offers and pressures to buy, but you must decide how much you can afford before you start spending."
Other tips put forward by Citizens Advice include reading the small print, doing your own credit checks and keeping things simple.
The average UK resident will spend £479 on Christmas items this year, according to recent research from HSBC.
