People who are worried about slipping into debt this Christmas may be encouraged by claims that many festive items will be cheaper this year.

According to research from Halifax, buying Christmas presents should be less expensive this year, with the price of clothing now six per cent lower than 2007 and the cost of toys and games falling by five per cent.

The study also reveals that the cost of turkey has dropped by two per cent in 12 months, meaning a Christmas dinner could be more affordable.

Despite these findings, the bank has urged Christmas shoppers to be careful with their money in light of the current economic situation.

Alan Brindley, head of Halifax Credit Cards, commented: "A number of Christmas favourites have fallen - welcome Christmas cheer for festive shoppers."

"However, while Christmas cake and a number of other items may have come down in cost, times remain tough and the importance of setting aside a budget and sticking to it is paramount."

A recent survey from National Savings & Investments found that 37 per cent of British people plan to make their own cards and decorations to save money and avoid debt this Christmas.
