Brits urged to take control of finances

Brits urged to take control of financesFriday 9th January 2009

British consumers have been urged to act quickly in order to clear their debts and get rid of any "financial hangover" they may be suffering from at the beginning of 2009.

Citing recent research from moneyexpert.co.uk which found that over 4.5 million UK people were still paying back debts from Christmas 2007, the Daily Record has reminded debtors that "the sooner you act, the sooner it'll be gone".

The newspaper explains that tackling debts early is "vital" if people are to have a successful year financially.

It suggests two "simple steps" to effective debt management: "The first is to ensure you are on the lowest possible interest rates, and the second is to clear what you owe as quickly as possible."

According to the Daily Record, people should make a list of all their debts - including credit cards, personal loans and overdrafts - and then set about tackling them one by one.

Alternatively, those with severe debt problems may wish to seek help from a professional, as director of moneyexpert.com Sean Gardner recently advised.

"We'd advise everyone who is concerned to seek help early … Don't bury your head in the sand," he said.
