Brits heed debt advice and choose to holiday at home
Thursday 28th May 2009
Searching for bargains, budgeting before going on holiday and staying within the funds while there, as well as cutting back on spending on luxury items, are all taking hold among consumers, some of whom will holiday at home, research from Tesco Travel Money recently showed.
According to the AA, more evidence supporting this cost cutting notion emerged in the run up to the last bank holiday weekend as a record four million drivers used the organisation's online route planner for UK journeys.
This represents an 11 per cent increase in the figure recorded in the build-up to the same weekend last year, highlighting that recession-hit Britons are increasingly opting for domestic breaks.
"A mix of fine weather and lingering economic clouds appears to have lured holidaymakers onto Britain's roads as growing numbers shun more exotic climes for trips at home," explained AA route planner Dave Arnold.
"This trend looks set to continue and with forecasters tipping a hot summer it is more important than ever to plan your journey in advance to avoid hotspots and hot heads on busy summer roads.
Holidaymakers were recently advised by Abbey Credit Cards to opt for credit cards that would not set them back financially for using them abroad due to levies applied for withdrawals and foreign exchange.
According to research conducted by the bank, unnecessary foreign exchange fees will cost British holidaymakers £73 million this year.
