Brits adopt sensible debt management practices for annual breaksWednesday 27th May 2009

The harsh economic conditions have forced British consumers to adopt attitudes that make good debt management sense such as placing bargain hunting at the forefront of everything when it comes to booking holidays.

Research from Tesco Travel Money shows that more than half of Brits (54 per cent) still plan to have their two weeks away this year but a third of them (34 per cent) are planning to spend less than they did last year.

Some 12 per cent plan to spend even less, with two in five (43 per cent) cutting down the amounts they plan to spend on gifts and duty free items.

According to the study, people in the Midlands are the most versatile holiday bargain hunters, as well as better budgeters compared to other regions due to the fact that 80 per cent plan their spending before they go for their breaks.

One in six (16 per cent) Midland residents also won't go even a penny over budget whilst away, the study found.

"It's great to see that holidaymakers are pulling out the stops to get value for money and making sacrifices to ensure they get their two weeks in the sun," said a Tesco Travel Money spokesperson.

The organisation's research is complemented by findings from Defaqto's latest report into the travel insurance industry, which showed that due to the credit crunch people in the UK will cut the number of overseas trips they take to just one.

According to the report entitled Travel Insurance 2009: The Year of the Staycation, holidaying in the UK and visiting friends and relatives is going to be a priority for many this year.
