Britons cut back on Valentine's spending
Thursday 12th February 2009
Research from Abbey Banking reveals that 39 per cent of the people celebrating Valentine's Day on Saturday (February 14th) will spend less on the object of the affections than they did last year.
The survey suggests that many Britons are attempting to be resourceful in a bid to save money for Valentine's Day, with 12 per cent making a card for their beloved instead of buying one.
In addition, nine per cent of couples will head out for a meal on February 13th or 15th in order to avoid the most expensive restaurant prices.
Susan Voase, spokesperson for Abbey Banking, said that elaborate Valentine's Day gestures have become "the latest casualty of the credit crunch".
She added: "Cash-strapped Britons will be hoping that it's still the thought that counts as they turn to more cost-effective ways to show their love this Valentine's Day."
According to research from moneysupermarket.com, the average British male is set to spend £48 on Valentine's Day this year.
