Airline ticket prices set to climb

Airline ticket prices set to climbTuesday 12th August 2008

A spike in the price of airline tickets will mean that foreign holidays are set to become increasingly unaffordable to millions of debt-hit Britons in months to come, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by travel company OAG found that from October this year, one in 14 of the world's airline seats will be axed.

This reduced availability, coupled with soaring fuel prices being faced by airlines, is set to drive prices up for existing flights by around four per cent.

OAG calculates that this would result in a family of four paying an extra £150 for a long-haul return flight to Orlando in Florida.

Meanwhile, return tickets also for a four-person family to Los Angeles and New York would rise in price by £60 and £48 respectively.

The higher cost of travelling abroad combined with higher repayments on mortgage and credit card debt is believed to be forcing millions of consumers to abandon plans to travel abroad this year in favour of cheaper breaks within the UK.
