£57.98 for a pint in 2058Tuesday 4th November 2008

British people may be forced to go to greater lengths to manage their debts over the next 50 years, according to new figures.

Research from Norwich Union suggests that young people could be shelling out as much as £57.98 for a pint of bitter in 2058 if price inflation continues at the same rate.

A pint of milk in 2058 could cost £5.35, while a kilo of potatoes could reach £76. Smokers could pay up to £76 for a packet of cigarettes.

The estimations are based on the price changes that have happened since 1958 when a plain white loaf cost just 4.5 pence, this has risen to £1.11 in 2008.

Paul Goodwin, from Norwich Union said: "These predictions for the future may seem extreme, but the fact remains that many household expenses have risen by ten or 20 times or more in the last 50 years, so it's perfectly possible that the same could happen again in another 50 years' time."
